Introduction

Women’s empowerment and its influence on the well-being of women and their families have been a topic of interest for researchers and programme-implementing organisations alike. The common discourse among the development community emphasises that empowering women through income generation and education, and elevating their status in the community brings benefits and positive changes to society as a whole. However, empirical evidence of a direct relational effect is lacking with no consistent definition and measures for women’s empowerment. Moreover, these definitions and measures vary across geographical and temporal spaces. As the body of literature on the concept of women’s empowerment and how it positively impacts on different development indicators, specifically health indicators, continues to grow, this chapter seeks to contribute to the existing literature with a focus on women’s empowerment, household food security, and child nutritional status within the context of Vietnam.

Vietnam has made significant strides forward in terms of the different health indicators, and the country has been on its way to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) (Dollar, 2004). Despite such gains and rapid economic development, child undernutrition is still a significant public health problem, with 25 per cent being stunted and 14 per cent underweight (NIN, 2016). Therefore, understanding the determinant factors for child undernutrition in Vietnam is critical.
